Brazil : IBM collaborates with BRAZIL to build a wafer fab [TendersInfo (India)]
(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) IT giant IBM is collaborating with Brazilian development bank BNDES and the EBX Group of Brazilian billionaire Eike Batista, to build and operate a wafer fab in the south of Brazil.
The SIX Semicondutores project has been estimated to cost around 1 billion reals (approx. $500 million) and has been proposed for construction in Ribeirao das Neves, in the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais state. The fab is expected to reach completion and launch operations in 2014 providing 300 direct jobs.
Although the facility has been variously described as designed to make chipsets and custom circuits, it is clear that the chip factory is proposed to be a foundry facility to support Brazilian and other fabless chip firms. Most of the thrust for the project is being provided by the country's government which will contribute over half the funds through BNDES. But still, EBX unit SIX Solucoes Intelligentes and BNDESPAR will each own a 33% stake in SIX Semiconductores. IBM, local state banks and construction partners will own the balance.
IBM is expected to offer production process technology and know-how in exchange of its stake.
